Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin [Animation]

About

This Destination Earth animation series follows the adventures of science filmmaker Rosa as she explores key aspects of DestinE, discovering the technologies and scientific innovations developed and implemented by ECMWF and more than 90 partner institutions.

The Climate DT represents the first ever attempt to operationalise the production of global multi-decadal climate projections, leveraging the world-leading supercomputing facilities of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking along with some of the leading European climate models.

It is implemented by a partnership led by CSC, currently involving 12 leading climate institutions, supercomputing centres, national meteorological services, academia and industrial partners, through a contract procured by ECMWF.

About the video

In this episode, Rosa delves deeper into the world of Digital Twins, exploring the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT). After experiencing a heatwave, she sets out to understand how technology can help society prepare for climate impacts. Along the way, she meets urban planners and water managers dealing with rising temperatures and flood risks, learning about their real challenges.

The episode shows how the Climate DT can support adaptation by using high-resolution climate models, advanced supercomputing and flexible digital workflows. From mitigating urban heat to planning for extreme flooding, Rosa discovers how this tool can simulate future conditions and “what-if” scenarios to help build more resilient communities.
